Charlie started as an Administrative Assistant (AA) and has built a career spanning business management support, frontline casework, compliance enforcement, and operational leadership

After leaving school with A-Levels, Charlie initially worked in hospitality before joining the Civil Service for job security, development, and progression opportunities.

Throughout their career, Charlie has focused on helping people navigate complex systems, supporting colleagues, and improving service quality. 

Charlie values continuous learning and is an active member of diversity networks, championing inclusive practices. Ongoing professional development through Civil Service Learning, ODP programmes, and leadership training remains a priority.

Charlie joined HMRC as an Administrative Assistant in a frontline help and advice team, providing customer support and essential administrative assistance. They handled customer enquiries, maintained accurate data records, managed inboxes and work queues, and supported caseworkers and managers with day-to-day operations.

This role gave Charlie a strong understanding of HMRC processes, customer needs, and service delivery standards, building a solid foundation in operational delivery and public service.

Charlie moved to the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) as an Administrative Officer, strengthening their understanding of how operational services are supported, governed, and monitored. They contributed to performance reporting, record management, and governance processes, gaining experience in data handling, resource planning, and business assurance.  

Alongside role responsibilities, Charlie completed further customer service learning through the Operational Delivery Profession (ODP) Customer Curriculum via Civil Service Learning (CSL) and Government Campus. Charlie grew their confidence in communication, process improvement, and operational best practice.  

Through this blend of operational support work and ongoing development, Charlie grew into a confident and capable administrative professional, supporting the MoJ’s mission to deliver effective and reliable public services.

Seeking to return to direct customer impact, Charlie made a sideways move to the Legal Aid Agency (LAA) in a frontline casework and customer support role. Charlie guided customers through the legal aid process, managed high-volume casework, ensured compliance with eligibility and documentation requirements, and handled sensitive conversations with empathy, supporting customers who were often experiencing stressful or complex situations. 

Alongside day‑to‑day delivery, Charlie contributed to local service improvements, completed specialist legal aid training, through additional Operational Delivery Profession (ODP) learning, and added depth frontline delivery expertise in a complex, high-pressure environment.

Charlie was promoted to an Executive Officer (EO) role in HM Passport Office, taking on a role requiring strong judgement, accuracy, and accountability in a security-sensitive environment. They were responsible for validating passport applications and conducting compliance checks, ensuring all decisions met legislative requirements, stepping into a position that required a high level of accuracy, accountability, and leadership within a security-sensitive environment.

Charlie managed a small team, providing day-to-day direction, monitoring performance, and supporting colleagues with complex or high-risk cases, including those involving incomplete information or potential fraud. This role strengthened their leadership capability, decision-making confidence, and ability to maintain high standards in a fast-paced operational setting.

Alongside operational delivery, Charlie supported coaching and mentoring activity and completed formal leadership and compliance training. Through this role, they developed strong operational leadership skills and contributed directly to the security and integrity of UK passport services.

Operational Team Leader

Charlie returned to the Legal Aid Agency on a lateral move into an Operational Team Leader role, where they lead teams delivering complex casework in a demanding service environment. They are responsible for overseeing performance, ensuring consistent standards, and supporting timely, well-reasoned decision-making.   

In this role, Charlie uses data and insight to monitor delivery, identify issues, and drive continuous improvement. They provide clear leadership, coach staff through complex cases, and support the development of new colleagues through induction and mentoring.  

Charlie is also committed to their own development, participating in the ODP Leadership Development Programme and acting as a mentor to others. The learning allowed Charlie to broaden their capability in strategic thinking, people leadership, and organisational awareness. Through this role, they continue to strengthen their leadership practice and contribute to the ongoing improvement of Legal Aid services for both colleagues and service users.
