Ash's early exposure to policy, strategy, and operational delivery establishes a strong foundation for accelerated progression.

Ash’s first 12-month placement as a Fast Streamer provides a deep introduction to government operations. Ash completes the Operational Delivery Fast Stream induction, learns MoD systems and processes, and leads and manages operational teams, combining frontline delivery with management responsibility.
Alongside day-to-day leadership, Ash begins the CMI Level 6 Leadership and Management qualification and completes Civil Service Learning courses in managing teams, managing change, and digital skills. Through peer learning, cohort events, and shadowing senior leaders, Ash develops strong capability in stakeholder engagement, communication, and operational decision-making. Ash successfully completes Year 1 and progresses to a stretching Year 2 placement to SEO level.

Initially finding the scope of responsibility challenging, Ash builds confidence through Fast Stream residentials, peer networks, and coaching. Ash champions continuous improvement, pilots new ways of working, and uses data and insight to shape service delivery, earning a reputation for inclusive, results-driven leadership.

In Ash’s third and final year on the Fast Stream, Ash operates at SEO level with a stretch to Grade 7, leading multi-disciplinary teams including analysts, data engineers, and delivery professionals. Ash manages complex projects within a high-profile analytical environment, balancing strategic oversight with hands-on leadership.
Ash also completes the Policy to Delivery Management programme, executive leadership training, and attends masterclasses in organisational change. They play a key role in delivering a major data transformation initiative, improving reporting and decision-making across ONS. Ash mentors emerging leaders and successfully completes the Fast Stream, becoming eligible for substantive Grade 7 roles.

Maritime Security & Vessel Traffic Management Operational Lead

Following successful completion of the Fast Stream, Ash takes up a substantive Grade 7 role within the Maritime and Coastguard Agency. They lead operational teams delivering maritime security intelligence and safety compliance, overseeing complex, high-stakes programmes critical to national safety.
Ash undertakes a department-specific executive leadership programme, strengthening strategic leadership, stakeholder management, and change delivery. Key achievements include implementing a new performance management framework, leading compliance initiatives, and representing the agency at national forums. Ash is recognised for strategic vision, resilience, and commitment to developing others, contributing to impact well beyond their own organisation.
